legendary city of Troy (Homer’s Iliad) and was adopted in 1789. Having the closest ties with both Schenectady and Albany (as part of the Capital District). Troy was first settled in 1707 by Dirck Van der Hayden. Troy was a part of the Van Rensselaer grant in 1629. It officially became titled the Town of Troy in 1791, originally a part of the Rensselaerwyck Manor. The township included Brunswick and Lansingburg was eventually merged into Troy in 1900. Troy was officially named a village in 1801 and a city in 1816.

Troy is located in Rensselaer County and along the eastern bank of the famous & historic Hudson River. . This area makes up the bulk of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with a population of 850,957. Troy is home to the college R.P.I (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), Russell Sage College,Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) among others.

Currently, Troy is making efforts to restore the downtown area and bring shops back to the area. Troy is working hard to bring in high end restaurants, popular bars, and expand it’s list of musical venues in hopes of making Troy one of the Capital Districts most popular places

During the War of 1812 army forces were led by Stephen Van Rensselaer of Troy. A local butcher and meat-packer named Samuel Wilson supplied the military with meat. He apparently obtained a contract to supply beef to the Army and according to local legend packages and barrels were stamped “US” and many translated the initials to stand for “Uncle Sam” referring to Samuel Wilson. Troy is recognized as being the historical home of Uncle Same (Samuel Wilson). He died in 1854 and his body was buried in Troy’s own Oakwood cemetery.

In the early 189th and 20th centuries Troy was one of the most prosperous cities in New York as well as the entire United States. Troy became a leader in the industrial market.

Troy still maintains some of the same historic buildings originally built during it’s construction. One of the areas in Troy, The Antique District, are homes to many cafe’s, coffee shops, music stores, and art galleries.

Troy has a history of culture and continues to host free shows throughout the city. It is also a staple of the Capital District’s hardcore music scene, which has one of the state’s most dedicated and loyal fan base. Troy also has many venues that are open to rap music, helping further Troy’s standing as one of the Capital District’s best local music market.

Good to Know

The Troy Sentinel was the first publisher of the world-famous holiday poem; “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (also known as “The Night Before Christmas” or “Twas the Night Before Christmas”). This was published anonymously December 23, 1823.

The Troy Record is the local newspaper.

One of the many Troy landmarks is seen downtown. Frear’s Troy Cash Bazaar, also known as Frear’s Department Store, was once one of the largest in the entire New York state.

A local legend that a Dutch girl had been kidnapped by an Indian male who did not want her to marry someone else gained some credence when two skeletons were found in a cave under Poestenkill Falls in the 1950s. One skeleton was female and Caucasian with an iron ring. The other was Native-American and male.
