Saratoga is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The name reflects the presence of mineral springs in the area. The Town of Saratoga is located on the eastern border of the county and is located east of Saratoga Springs. It was first settled in the 17th Century as Fort Saratoga. According to historical accounts, Sir William Johnson (hero of the French and Indian Wars) was brought to the area by native friends in 1767.
It was a belief that there was a spring with helpful medicinal properties that could be used to treat war wounds. Today, spring is now known as High Rock Spring. And no, not the type of springs that display beautiful water features
Saratoga was one of the original towns when the county was formed in 1791. The town was established in 1788 while it was still part of Albany County. The town line is formed by the Hudson River and is the border of Washington County.
It is best known as the location that British General John Burgoyne surrendered to American General Horatio Gates at the end of the Battles of Saratoga. That event has widely been considered to be the turning point during the American Revolutionary War for the United States . A majority of the battles took place in Stillwater.
The Saratoga Race Course in the adjoining city of Saratoga Springs is the oldest operating sports venue in the country, but is often mistakenly associated to the town of Saratoga.. It opened on August 3, 1863 by John Hunter (the 1st Chairman of the Jockey Club) and was built by William R. Travers. Saratoga Racetrack is the oldest organized sporting venue of any kind in the United States today and provides daily headlines for the sports news world. Since 1864 the track has been the site of the oldest major thoroughbred horse race in the United States, the Travers Stakes.. The Saratoga meet is 6 weeks long with Labor Day now being the last day of racing.
SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center) is an amphitheater in Saratoga Springs (opened on July 9, 1966) which presents summer festivals of all kinds of music , concerts, plays, dance, and a Wine & Food Festival.
