Bolton was first settled in 1792 and was originally formed from part of the Town of Thurman in 1799. Eventually, Bolton lost some of it’s territory due to the creation of other towns in the area. It is located on the east border of Warren county and it’s borders are defined by Lake George.
When Bolton annexed from Thurman on March 25, 1799, it included all of what later became known as Hague (formerly Rochester), Horicon and part of Lake George (formerly Caldwell). Chester and Bolton were annexed from Thurman on the same day.
Rochester split from Bolton April 6, 1807. It’s boundaries once included what is now Horicon. The name of the town changed from Rochester to Hague exactly one year later.
Caldwell was created from areas of Bolton, Queensbury and Thurman as of March 27, 1810. The town changed its name to Lake George on April 24, 1962 conforming to the village. Horicon formed from part of Bolton and Hague on April 4, 1838

* Northwest Bay – in Lake George north of Bolton Landing.
* Riverbank – on the west town line.
* Tongue Mountain Range – A series of mountains forming a peninsula into Lake George and helps create Northwest Bay. The mountain consists of: Brown Mountain, Fivemile Mountain, Fifth Peak, French Point Mountain, and First Peak.
* Trout Lake – in the south-central part of the town.
