Albany Spotlight: Delmonico’s

Albany Music News

Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse in Albany, New York, is a popular dining destination known for its unique atmosphere and large portions, blending classic Italian cuisine with traditional steakhouse fare.

What Makes It Unique: The Delmonico’s Experience

Delmonico’s sets itself apart by cultivating an exciting, old-school, “polished casual” atmosphere with a nostalgic touch of Americana and Italian-American culture.

  • Atmosphere and Decor: From the moment you walk in, the restaurant immerses you in a mid-20th-century vibe, often described as ’50s mobster-themed. Hosts may be outfitted like ’50s mobsters, and the background music is often the sounds of Frank Sinatra and other Italian-American singers. The walls are decorated with hand-drawn caricatures of “larger than life” famous Italian characters, and the Wannabe Room features caricatures of actors who played Italian roles but aren’t Italian themselves.
  • The Cuisine Fusion: The core concept is an Italian-inspired steakhouse, offering generous-sized signature dishes that fuse both culinary worlds, such as a perfectly cooked steak served with a side of pasta.
  • Themed Private Rooms: The Albany location features several private dining areas perfect for events, including the Sinatra Room, the Rat Pack Room, and the aforementioned Wannabe Room.

History

Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse, as a chain, was first opened in Syracuse, New York, in 1998 by the Wade and Monte families. Its roots trace back to an earlier family business, “Jack Appleseed’s,” which began in 1978. The founders aimed to create the perfect combination of a well-cooked steak and satisfying Italian pasta. The Albany location on Central Ave was established by 2013 and has been a popular fixture in the area since.

Note: This New York-based chain is a separate entity from the original, legendary Delmonico’s in New York City (established 1837), which is credited with inventing dishes like Eggs Benedict and Baked Alaska.

Highlighted Menu Items and Customer Feedback

The restaurant has a high rating of 4.4 stars and customer feedback consistently praises the large portions, value, and key signature dishes.

Highly Praised Dishes:

  • The Delmonico Steak: This is the signature item—a HUGE 24-ounce Certified Angus Beef, center-cut rib-eye steak. Patrons describe it as a “mountain of meat” that is “perfectly cooked” and “juicy.”
  • Chicken Riggies: A local favorite, this dish consists of rigatoni pasta, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, hot cherry peppers, and chicken tossed in a special light sauce. Reviewers call it “spicy and creamy” and a must-try for those who enjoy the Central New York style of the dish.
  • Veal Parmigiana: Noted for its “tender veal” and generous, enormous portions.
  • Chicken Sinatra: A specialty featuring chicken breasts on sautéed greens with hot peppers, mushrooms, prosciutto, provolone, Marsala sauce, and garlic mashed potatoes.

Customer Feedback

Customer reviews highlight the lively, ‘mafia-themed’ ambiance and the exceptional value due to the sheer size of the meals. However, some common constructive feedback relates to long wait times and occasional inconsistency in service during peak hours.

  • User Review: “The Delmonico Steak is a mountain of meat and worth every penny. It was cooked perfectly medium-rare and was so flavorful. The atmosphere is loud but fun, and our server was very attentive despite how busy they were. Five stars!”
  • User Review: “If you like Utica-style Chicken Riggies, this is the place to get them in Albany. It was creamy, had a great kick, and the chicken was moist. My only complaint is that we had to wait 45 minutes past our reservation time on a Saturday.”

Significant Events

While the Albany location has hosted countless private banquets and celebrations in its themed dining rooms, one significant event involved the chain as a whole:

  • Chain-wide Health Inspection Response (2024): The parent company made headlines when a viral social media post in late 2024 alleged unsanitary conditions at its Utica location, leading to a Department of Health investigation. The chain’s management released a public statement expressing commitment to food safety and customer support, noting its decades-long history in the community.

The chain is also known for its Veteran and Active Duty Military support, often running promotions like a buy-one-get-one-free offer on the Delmonico Steak on Veterans Day.
