Amsterdam

Amsterdam (originally the Town of Caughnawaga) is a city located in Montgomery County area of upstate formed in 1788. It has been named Veeders Mills as well as Veedersburgh until its official change to the name of Amsterdam in 1803.Amsterdam is derived from the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It is on the banks of the Mohawk River with a majority of Amsterdam on the north bank but also Port Jackson, which makes it the only city in the state that is divided by the Mohawk River.

Amsterdam was incorporated as a village in 1830 and in 1885 became a city after the annexation of the Village of Port Jackson.

Amsterdam experienced a huge economic growth in 1825 after the Erie Canal was completed and became a big manufacturing area (mostly of carpets) after the construction of a dam on the Chuctenunda River in 1875.

The Lowdown

Amsterdam continues to grow in population as the city itself lures more and more businesses to the town. With great real estate pricing, it had become an ideal option for many first time homebuyers as well as first time businesses. There is a ton of history to explore in Amsterdam and is a bridge to Johnstown, Saratoga (via RT 67) and Gloversville as well. This is a great place to buy your very first home, find a great school system for your children, or explore rich New York history. It can be accessible via the Thruway, 890, RT5, and RT67 among others. Although it lacks a true music scene, many of the 518 musicians come from Amsterdam.

Good To Know

As the 19th century progressed the city became a center for textile, pearl button, and carpet manufacturing and was also the home of Coleco at one point. Today some of the major manufacturers are Fownes Glove Company and Fiber Glass Industries. Amsterdam at one point also had a mall, the Amsterdam Mall, but has since been converted to the Amsterdam Riverfront Center after a major decline.
